The Desert Campout/Trestle Hike!
OR
Why did the ranger run Jason & I out of camp?
Hi Jason, Of our top 10, this weekend comes in at #9! From the very start Friday night until we pulled into our driveway on Sunday afternoon, we had one adventure after another! Let’s go over the events.
Friday Night
#1 The motor home caught fire in the middle of the desert. The hot wire connecting the radio to the battery lost it’s insulation and grounded against the metal engine cover. We were engulfed in smoke, stopped in the middle of S2 highway and jumped out while rescuing the dog and fumbling with the fire extinguisher. God was with us. Had the fire started while we were on the freeway, we could have wrecked trying to pull over. As it was, we were in the middle of nowhere. There was very little damage.
#2 Hooking up with our peeps at the Agua Caliente camp ground. They included Bill and Karen, John Bolt, and the Maynard’s. A bunch of fun loving Christians, all of them. We pulled in at about 10 PM. Didn’t do much that night. Everybody was turning in as we arrived so we followed their lead.
Saturday #3 The hike to the trestle!!! John Sprekles had the railroad line built in the early 1900s to connect Arizona with San Diego. It was a complete failure and has been abandoned for most of it’s 90 years of existence.
The drive was fun in Bill & Karen’s Explorer. We made a couple of stops at interesting places and ultimately made it to the abandoned tracks. The hike was great! Buckeye loved it! We all hiked about 5 miles west as the tracks climbed through desert side of the mountain range that leads to San Diego and then back again. We went through many tunnels and across many bridges before we came in sight of the famous trestle. It is my understanding that it is still the largest wooded treacle in the world. It seems that you and Jeff got the closest to it. It was a great hike!
#4 Next, we returned to our camp and started cooking a savory dinner. Our spirits were high as we anticipated a nighttime of story swapping, star gazing, and the like. It was at this time that the long arm of the law made it’s presence felt. Within seconds of arriving, the county ranger had singled us out. He was mad and we were in serious violation of the law. We were abruptly kicked out of the campground! We found out as we entered the campground Friday night, that pets weren’t allowed. That was a big surprise to us. We were in the middle of the desert! We figured, What the Hey! We didn’t know about the rule and how mad could they get for having a fun loving dog in a campground in the middle of nowhere? We learned how serious they were about the rule! We got evicted!!!
#5 After our eviction, we thought about just camping along side the road a short distance from the campground so that we could still be a part of the group but decided to drive towards Julian. We pulled over to sleep just outside of town. It was freezing cold! Maybe in the 20's. We weren’t prepared for that kind of cold.
Sunday
#6 Lastly, we spent the next morning in Julian. Had a good time. It was at this time that we discovered that photographer who later that year, took our old time picture. (By the way, I haven’t forgot about your request for copies of them. It will be done soon.)
Well, that is about it for now for #9. Our prayers are always with you both. I greatly value my relationship with you. You’re a great son-in law. I can’t wait to see you.
With great love and affection,
